(voir notre manifeste)

Anthropolgie et géographie : dialogues passés, présents et futurs

Anthropology and Geography : Dialogues Past, Present and Future

http://www.therai.org.uk/conferences/anthropology-and-geography/

BRITISH MUSEUM/SOAS/RGS, 4-7 JUNE 2020

The Anthropology and Geography : Dialogues Past, Present and Future conference is jointly organised by the RAI, the RGS, the British Academy, the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at SOAS, and the BM’s Department for Africa, Oceania and the Americas. The conference will be held in SOAS, Senate House, and the Clore Centre of the British Museum. The opening, keynote lecture will take place at the RGS on the evening of 4 June.

The RAI believes that anthropology and geography should be close, all the more so as the two disciplines have so much in common, both today and in the past. It hopes very much that through this conference, existing dialogues can be explored and further conversations take place on a host of vital issues including the Anthropocene, definitions of ethnology, methodology and fieldwork, contemporary understanding, education and public awareness, and the place of our disciplines in the modern world. We hope equally that this will lead to a shared intellectual understanding of our past and the emergence of the two disciplines, and an even closer engagement in the future, particularly in terms of emerging fields of mutual interest: e.g. digital media, geospatial mapping, and satellite photography.

Convenors : Philippe Charpentier, Georgeta Stoica, Cufr Mayotte

Long abstract :

What sort of collaborations between geography and anthropology when teaching in schools ? (and not only) This panel will search to explore the different forms of collaborations that (may) exist between geography and anthropology when geography is taught as a discipline to the future generations (elementary, secondary but also post-graduate schools or university) and when anthropology has to find a better place. We invite proposals for papers exploring research-oriented, theoretical papers, historical practices, creative collaboration, practices testimonies in relation to the way we teach geography and/or anthropology. Here are some questions in relation with this panel that we would like to address : What empirical and theoretical methodologies are used to permit this collaboration by the teachers ? For what questions do the teachers use concepts, methodologies from the anthropology when they teach geography ? Why is it important to use anthropological method, concepts, questions when we teach geography ? What are the actual geographic themes taught in the schools that have an anthropological background (for instance, the geographic notion of "l'habiter" in the french primary school program).

How to apply :

All proposals must be made via the online form that can be found on each panel page.

Proposals should consist of a paper title, a (very) short abstract of <300 characters and an abstract of 250 words. On submission the proposal, the proposing author (but not any co-authors listed) will receive automated email confirming receipt. If you do not receive this email, please first check the login environment (click login on the left on the conference website) to see if your proposal is there. If it is, it simply means confirmation got spammed or lost; and if it is not, it means you need re-submit, as process went wrong somewhere.

Proposals will be marked as pending until the end of the Call for papers. Convenors will then be asked to make their decisions over the papers proposed to their workshop by 20 January 2020 and to communicate those to the proposers, marking them up within the login environment (Cocoa). Papers which are neither accepted nor rejected, but marked for 'transfer', will then be considered by the Conference Committee to see where else they might fit in the conference programme. There is no guarantee that such papers can be re-housed. We aim to resolve all transfers by 21 February 2021.

Timing of presentations :

Convenors are reasonably free to run their sessions as they like, but the norm is to allot each presenter a maximum of 20 minutes (for presentation and questions/discussion). The key is to respect the fact that many presenters have travelled a long way in order to be able to contribute and clearly need time to set out their argument.
